A Spring Visit to the Flower Market: Osmanthus, Asparagus Fern, and a Few Small Finds

Spring is here, and with everything waking back up, the air seems full of that restless seasonal energy. Anyway—getting a few flowers and plants for the house felt like a pretty good idea. With nothing much going on over the weekend, I wandered over to the flower market and, naturally, also bought random snacks along the way.

Wandering the market

I didn’t go in with a real plan. Gardenia? Roses? Maybe something else? I was mostly just browsing and seeing what caught my eye.

The flower market gets absolutely packed on weekends. Since it’s close to a university area, there were plenty of young couples walking around too, which gave the whole place even more of that lively spring feeling.

At one point I was tempted to buy some tiny fish because they were ridiculously cute. But honestly, bringing them home would probably just mean sending them to an early end, so I talked myself out of it.

In the end, I decided to pick up a few fragrant plants that could also help freshen the air indoors, plus a couple of little decorative pieces.

Halfway through the trip, I grabbed a grilled sausage and then an ice cream. Both were absurdly expensive.

The joy you get from not spending money is mentally exhausting. The joy you get from spending money is emotionally painful. That’s life, I guess.

By the time I left, I had bought an osmanthus plant, an asparagus fern, one little ornament whose identity I still can’t explain, and a small succulent, all for a total of 100 🤑.

The last round of plants

Before the Spring Festival, I’d bought some flowers too. My mom, claiming she was helping them survive better the next year, gave them a full-on buzz cut. And sure enough, they did survive very well. The flowers, however, would probably prefer not to go through that again in their next life.

What I liked most

My favorite pieces are still the dried flowers on the dining table and that tiny little succulent. But I have to say, keeping osmanthus indoors makes the whole room smell amazing.

I’m also pretty happy with the two little ornaments—they turned out to be a nice touch.
