The Mac does have a 3.5 mm audio jack, but having a cable sticking out at the front just looks awkward. So the idea was simple: if the speaker is wired, why not make it wireless? A small Bluetooth audio module seemed worth trying, and after finding one for 4.6, I ordered it right away. Then came the impatient wait for delivery.

Parts and tools

• Bluetooth audio module
• Wired speaker
• Phone charger plug, preferably as small as possible
• USB to Type-C charging cable, preferably a short one
• A short piece of thin wire
• Soldering iron

The build

First, take apart the phone charger plug. Then open up the wired speaker so the internal circuit board is exposed.

Next, prepare the Bluetooth module. Solder the thin wires onto the module, making sure the wiring order is correct. Pay attention here: the middle pin is ground.

After that, connect the two wires from the charger to the speaker’s power supply. Use the USB to Type-C cable to power the Bluetooth module. Once the speaker is turned on, the indicator lights on both the speaker and the module should light up. If nothing lights up, go back and check the circuit connections.

The last part is connecting the Bluetooth module to the speaker’s audio input. Match the left channel, right channel, and ground, then solder them in place with the iron.

And that’s it — the wired speaker is now a Bluetooth speaker.
